MCM Turns 50: Why Visetos, Stark & Boston Are Trendy Again
Brown Visetos, gold hardware, a backpack covered in studs – anyone who has scrolled through TikTok in recent months has definitely seen MCM. What many people do not realise: the label is not an American streetwear invention, it comes from Munich. And in 2026 it turns 50.
For vintage fans this anniversary is more than a number. MCM is reissuing its best-known models and celebrating in Munich this autumn – and the originals of exactly those models have been on the second-hand market for years.

1976 in Munich: what MCM really stands for
MCM was founded in Munich in 1976 by Michael Cromer. The three letters originally stood for his name and the city: Michael Cromer München. Today the brand reads them as Modern Creation München – so the link to the city has been part of the brand DNA from the very beginning.
MCM became famous in the eighties with a material that has cult status today: the Visetos monogram in cognac. Coated canvas with a printed logo – hard-wearing, easy to care for and unmistakable. One detail collectors love: many heritage bags carry a brass plaque with an individual number inside.
50 years of MCM: the anniversary comes home to Munich
For the anniversary MCM has introduced its own anniversary logo and is repositioning its icons under the heading “SMART Luxury”: bags that work season-independently, move with you and stay relevant for years. To us that sounds remarkably like the argument second hand has been making all along.
The highlight of the anniversary year takes place where it all started: in Munich, around Oktoberfest from 19 September to 4 October 2026. There is a second Munich signal too – in July 2026 MCM and the FC Bayern women's team announced a partnership, including a joint collection for autumn.
The fact that Munich and Oktoberfest belong together is hardly a new marketing idea. More than a hundred years ago, Oktoberfest was already the image people sent out from this city:

The four icons – and their vintage originals
MCM is reinterpreting four classics for the anniversary. And this is where it gets interesting for you: when a brand reissues its icons, demand for the originals rises with it.
| Model | What it is | Vintage with us |
|---|---|---|
| Stark backpack | The studded backpack that made MCM internationally famous – vintage in cognac, rosé or Munich blue | MCM backpacks |
| Liz shopper | The everyday tote for a laptop and everything else, often with a matching pouch | MCM shoppers |
| Ella Boston | The compact bowling shape with a shoulder strap – possibly the most beautiful vintage MCM of all | MCM handbags |
| Ottomar weekender | The large travel bag for the weekend – rare in vintage, but worth the search | Travel bags |
How the icons are worn today
Stark, Liz and Ella Boston – all vintage originals from our own stock, worn rather than staged.
Three of the four icons – available right now
All three are one-off pieces. If one has gone, you will find similar models arriving continuously in the MCM collection.
The difference this is really about
Our vintage MCM bags usually sit between roughly €260 and €600. A new Stark backpack costs a multiple of that – for the same shape, the same Visetos, the same idea. The only difference is who carried the bag before you.
What to look out for when buying vintage
Visetos is one of the most copied monograms in existence. These points will help you make a first assessment:
- Plaque and number: many heritage models carry a brass plaque with an individual number inside. It should be cleanly made and firmly anchored.
- Print and alignment: on originals the logo pattern runs evenly and is sensibly aligned across seams and edges.
- Hardware: genuine MCM hardware feels heavy, engraving is sharp and even, not flatly stamped.
- Stitching and edges: even stitches, cleanly sealed edges – no excess glue.
- Condition of the material: with coated canvas the corners and edges are the weak point. Wear there is normal, but it should be reflected in the price.
You will find all the details in our in-depth guide to authenticating MCM bags. At 9ine Life we check every piece before it goes online.
Why vintage MCM is the smarter choice right now
MCM is celebrating its own history – and that history sits precisely in the decades our bags come from.
It fits the ongoing Y2K and logo trend: visible monograms are back, and nobody does them quite like Visetos. If you want the original, you buy second hand – more sustainable and considerably cheaper than the reissue.
For the 50th anniversary there is no better moment to carry a piece of Munich fashion history – one that has already proved it lasts.
